 Trees are about the oldest living things on the plant. Some trees even live for thousands of years. If the elm tree in your yard won’t live that long, it’s probably will longer than you and your children. So when planting trees in your outdoor space, and you are asking yourself, “How long does a tree live?” Think long into the future. Flowerbeds and gardens come and go, but trees live for generations. Here is some information on the average age of trees. It depends on the tree type. Some tree types don't live too long, possibly up to 50 years. Some like the Bristlecone Pine live close to 5,000 years. Most tree types live a couple of hundred years, outliving a human and some countries. Did you know that plenty of the big redwoods in California were around when Christopher Columbus discovered the new world? Seriously, How Long Does A Tree Live? So, trees can live from 50 to a lifetime. In America, the tree with the most extended lifespan, the Bristlecone Pine, grows in southern California and the mountains of Nevada. If a tree has enough food, sunshine, and water, then it can live to the end of its natural lifespan. With that being said, no amount of care can make one tree with a specific lifespan outlive another one. Persimmon has a typical lifespan of close to 60 years. The black willow, this tree will live close to 75 years. Alaska red cedar can live over 3,000 years. Giant sequoias can also live over 3,000 years. Trees that live in climates in which the temperature changes with specific seasons get rings inside their trunks. If you drilled a hole from the outside of the tree to the center, you could count the rings to know the age of the tree. It is best to ask an arborist to do this for you. If a tree falls after a storm or is cut down, the rings can be seen and counted. Most trees that are in warmer climates without any different seasons live a shorter life than other trees, and can typically be dated by personal memories or local records.  Removing a tree is typically a simple process. Tree removal experts are hired and scheduled to get rid of the tree, working without any obstacles or hassles from state or local officials. Though, there are regulations and rules in some cities and states requiring permits before trees are cut down. “Do I need a permit to cut down a tree on my property?” You probably will either per city ordinances or for preservation reasons. With little exceptions, most cities require that you get a permit to remove a tree on your property. You have to apply for the permit and pay a fee to determine whether you can eliminate the tree. When tent worm removal is needed, the egg or nest can typically be picked up by hand. Egg cases can be seen once leaves drop from trees in autumn. Bigger nests can be gone by pruning them out or wrapping them around a stick. The best time for tent worm removal is evening or early morning while they’re still probably in the nest. Using different types of parasitic wasps can also help eliminate tent worm. Fabricating a welcoming setting for birds is a great tent worm remedy. Sometimes eliminating tent worms means killing them. While little infestations can be taken care of by putting the nests into soapy water, insecticides work better for more significant populations. Bacillus thuringiensis is one that is very effective. Since this is a particular insecticide, it kills tent worms only, remaining safe for other wildlife. The rhizines (think tree roots) lets them attach, but don’t go deep enough to damage the tree in any way. Many folks feel that when a tree gets ill from having lichen, that the tree lichens are the reason for the illness. This isn’t possible. The lichen was most likely there long before your tree became ill. While lichen on trees is harmless, some folks feel they aren’t pretty to look at and want to kill them. One way to get rid of lichen is to scrub the tree bark with a soapy solution. Lichen is lightly attached, so it comes off quickly. Don’t rub too hard. You can end up damaging the tree, making it susceptible to insects and disease. Another technique for killing tree lichen is to spray the tree with copper-sulfate. Copper-sulfate applied on lichens on trees will destroy the fungus. You should use copper-sulfate as a remedy for tree lichen in early fall through late spring. This solution doesn’t work in cold weather. Another chemical to use is lime sulfur. Also, lime sulfur is used to kill the fungus that is part of a lichen. Be sure that the lime sulfur is not put on the leaves and roots. This will damage the tree. Do you have lichen on your trees?
